South Woods History
  • Originally a farm – by Hamlin family (full section)
  • Sold after WW1 and logged. – 15 acres of south woods cut first (flat)
  • Navy built hospital there – operated until mid 50’s (just to west)
  • Navy retained officer housing on South Woods. Used until mid-70’s

  • Part sold to school district (Shorecrest and Kellogg) and also school district leased hospital complex.
  • Woods is over 85 years old
  • Invasive species came in with Navy.

  • Transferred to DNR in late 70’s  until Shoreline became a city
  • Land sold by DNR – to construction company – fall 1996
  • SAFE Met with Briarcrest Community Group and approached Darlene Fairly.
  • Jennifer Belcher (head of DNR)  changed status from ‘highest bidder’ to ‘only biddable by public entities’.
